The question isn't if cold weather can damage pool equipment, but whether water will be allowed to freeze inside the equipment and plumbing when temperatures fall. Water expands as it freezes, and that expansion can crack pump housings, filter components, valves, heaters, chlorinators, and exposed pipes. Protecting a pool during a freeze comes down to one basic strategy: either keep water moving through vulnerable plumbing or remove the water before it can freeze.

For a Short Freeze, Keep Water Circulating

If freezing temperatures are expected for only part of the night and the pool remains open, continuous circulation is often the most practical protection. Running the circulation pump keeps water moving through the plumbing instead of allowing stagnant water to sit in exposed pipes and equipment.

If your pool has automatic freeze protection, confirm that the feature is actually enabled before cold weather arrives. Many systems use an outdoor air-temperature sensor to start the pump when temperatures approach freezing. Do not assume the setting is active simply because your pool has automation.

Quick answer: During a brief freeze, keep the circulation system running continuously while temperatures remain near or below freezing. For a severe freeze, extended outage, or winter shutdown, the safer approach may be draining and properly winterizing vulnerable equipment and plumbing.

Variable-speed pump owners should also verify that freeze protection overrides the normal schedule. A pump programmed to shut off at midnight does little good if the freeze begins at 2 a.m. and the automation is not configured correctly.

Make Sure Water Is Moving Through More Than the Main Pool

A common mistake is protecting the main circulation line while forgetting secondary plumbing. Pools can have several branches that hold water even when the primary pump is running.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Attached spa plumbing
  • Waterfalls, deck jets, bubblers, and other water features
  • Solar-heating lines
  • Booster-pump plumbing
  • Cleaner lines
  • Heater bypass loops
  • Above-ground sections of pipe near the equipment pad

A pool-and-spa combination deserves extra attention. Some automation systems alternate valves between pool and spa operation during freeze protection so water moves through both sets of plumbing. If your system stays permanently in one position, part of the plumbing may remain vulnerable even though the pump is running.

What Should You Do If the Power Goes Out?

A running pump only protects the system while electricity and water circulation continue. A winter power outage changes the situation quickly, especially when temperatures are expected to remain below freezing for many hours.

If circulation cannot be restored and the equipment is at risk of freezing, shut off electrical power to the pool equipment before attempting to drain it. Relieve pressure in the system and follow the equipment manufacturer's winterization procedure. Depending on the installation, this may involve removing drain plugs from the pump, filter, heater, chlorinator, or other components so trapped water has somewhere to escape.

Do not casually loosen fittings on a pressurized system, and do not attempt to operate a pump containing frozen water. Ice can prevent the impeller from turning and may already have damaged the housing.

Drain Equipment Completely When Winterizing

In climates where freezing weather is routine, simply running the pump all winter may not be the preferred strategy. A properly winterized pool has water removed from vulnerable equipment and, when appropriate, from plumbing lines.

The small amount of water left in the wrong place can cause surprisingly expensive damage. Pump housings have low areas where water collects. Filters usually have drain points. Heaters contain internal waterways that may retain water even after surrounding pipes appear empty. Multiport valves, check valves, and chlorination equipment can also trap water.

Winterization procedures vary significantly among equipment models, so use the instructions for your specific pump, filter, heater, automation system, and sanitizer. Professional winterization is particularly worthwhile when lines must be blown out and plugged correctly.

Do Not Depend on the Pool Heater to Prevent Freezing

Turning up the pool heater is not a substitute for freeze protection. The objective is to protect plumbing and equipment by maintaining circulation or properly removing water, not by trying to keep thousands of gallons of pool water warm during a cold snap.

Heating also does not guarantee that every branch of plumbing receives flow. A closed water-feature line or unused spa line can still contain stationary water while the main pool is circulating.

Protect Exposed Pipes Without Creating New Problems

Exposed plumbing at the equipment pad loses heat faster than buried plumbing. Temporary pipe insulation can provide additional protection, particularly around valves and short exposed runs. Insulation, however, should support a circulation or winterization plan rather than replace one.

Avoid wrapping an electric pump motor tightly in plastic or creating an airtight enclosure around electrical equipment. Trapped condensation and restricted ventilation can create separate equipment problems. Keep electrical components protected according to their manufacturer's requirements.

What pool owners often miss: Freeze damage frequently occurs in a small secondary line rather than the obvious main pipe. Check spa plumbing, water features, heater connections, booster-pump lines, and equipment that does not automatically receive flow when the filtration pump starts.

Check the Pool After the Freeze Passes

Do not assume everything is fine because the pump still runs. Once temperatures rise safely above freezing, inspect the equipment pad before returning to the normal schedule.

Look for new drips, split fittings, cracked pump housings, leaking filter components, unusual pressure readings, air entering the pump basket, or water appearing around the heater. A crack can remain almost invisible while frozen and begin leaking only after the ice melts.

If the pump lost prime, do not repeatedly run it dry. Restore normal water level, valve positions, drain plugs, and priming conditions before restarting equipment that was drained.

Freeze Weather Can Also Reveal a Separate Water-Loss Problem

After the cold snap is over, keep an eye on the pool level. Freeze preparation, draining equipment, cracked fittings, or previously unnoticed leaks can make unusual water loss more noticeable. The Best Freeze Plan Is Made Before the Temperature Drops

The worst time to learn where the pump drain plugs are located is during a dark, freezing power outage. Before winter weather arrives, identify the shutoff breaker, drain points, automation freeze settings, valve positions, and any plumbing branches that require special attention.

For a brief cold snap, reliable circulation may be enough to protect an operating pool. For prolonged freezing conditions, a power outage, or a seasonal closure, complete winterization becomes far more important. The key is consistency: either keep vulnerable water moving or properly remove it. Leaving water trapped and motionless inside exposed pool equipment is the situation you want to avoid.
