Those clues may mean your cartridge filter is collecting enough debris to restrict water flow. So, how often should pool filter cartridges be cleaned? The most useful answer is not a fixed number of weeks. Your filter's pressure, water flow, debris load, cartridge size, and pool conditions are better guides than the calendar.

Some pools can operate for months between cartridge cleanings, while others may need attention much sooner during pollen season, after storms, during an algae cleanup, or when landscaping constantly drops fine debris into the water. Learning what is normal for your particular pool makes filter maintenance far easier.

Many cartridge filter manufacturers recommend cleaning when pressure rises roughly 8 to 10 psi above the clean starting pressure, although the owner's manual for your specific filter should always take priority. Do Not Clean a Cartridge Filter Just Because a Month Has Passed

A schedule such as "clean every month" sounds convenient, but it ignores how differently pools operate. A large four-cartridge filter serving a lightly used screened pool may collect debris slowly. A smaller filter beside trees, landscaping, construction dust, or heavy swimmer activity can load up much faster.

Instead, establish a clean-pressure baseline. After the cartridges have been properly cleaned and the system is running normally, note the pressure shown on the gauge. If the pool uses a variable-speed pump, take the reading at the same pump speed each time. Comparing 1,500 RPM today with a pressure reading recorded at 2,500 RPM last month tells you very little because system pressure naturally changes with pump speed.

Write the clean pressure near the equipment pad or record it in your phone. That number becomes your reference point.

What Makes Pool Filter Cartridges Get Dirty Faster?

Several conditions can shorten the time between cleanings. Heavy leaf debris is obvious, but fine material often creates trouble faster because it packs tightly into the cartridge pleats.

  • Pollen and dust: Fine particles can coat a cartridge even when the pool surface looks relatively clean.
  • Algae: Dead algae can create an enormous filter load during cleanup. A cartridge that normally lasts months between cleanings may need repeated attention during an algae recovery.
  • Heavy swimming: Sunscreen, body oils, cosmetics, and other contaminants can accumulate on cartridge media.
  • Storm runoff and landscaping debris: Windblown soil, mulch dust, grass clippings, and organic material can rapidly increase filter loading.
  • An undersized filter: Less filter surface area means the cartridges have less capacity for debris before resistance increases.

A sudden need for much more frequent cleaning deserves investigation. The problem may not simply be "dirty cartridges." Persistent algae, unusual amounts of airborne debris, poor water chemistry, damaged cartridges, excessive flow, or inadequate filter capacity can all contribute to short filter cycles.

Watch Water Flow Along With the Pressure Gauge

The pressure gauge is valuable, but it should not be your only clue. As cartridges become loaded with debris, resistance through the filter increases and circulation may weaken. You might notice less force from the return jets, slower surface movement, reduced performance from attached water features, or disappointing suction while vacuuming.

If pressure seems abnormal but circulation still looks normal, verify that the gauge itself is working. A gauge that stays at the same number when the pump is turned off is an obvious warning that it may be stuck or damaged.

Also remember that high filter pressure does not automatically mean dirty cartridges. Partially closed return valves, restricted return plumbing, undersized fittings, or other downstream restrictions can also increase pressure. Likewise, very low pressure paired with weak flow can point toward a clogged pump basket, low pool water level, suction-side blockage, air leak, or pump problem rather than the cartridge filter alone.

How Should Cartridge Filters Be Cleaned?

Always follow the filter manufacturer's procedure. A pool filter is a pressurized vessel, so the pump must be shut off and system pressure fully relieved before the filter is opened. Never loosen a clamp, lid, or other closure while the system is pressurized.

Once safely removed, cartridges are generally rinsed with a garden hose, working carefully through the pleats so trapped debris is flushed away. A concentrated pressure-washer stream can damage filter media and should not be treated as a shortcut. The objective is to remove debris without fraying, stretching, or cutting the pleats.

If a cartridge feels greasy or does not rinse clean because of accumulated oils and lotions, simple water rinsing may not be enough. Use only cleaning methods and products approved for your particular cartridge. Chemical treatments should follow the cartridge or filter manufacturer's instructions rather than improvised mixtures.

A Quick Rinse and a Thorough Cleaning Are Not Always the Same Thing

During an unusually dirty period, such as algae cleanup, you may remove a heavy layer of debris and get the system circulating again. That does not necessarily mean the cartridge has received the same detailed cleaning you would perform during routine maintenance.

A more thorough service includes inspecting the full pleat depth, checking the bands that hold the pleats in place, examining end caps, looking for holes or tears, cleaning debris from manifolds or internal screens as directed by the manufacturer, and checking seals before reassembly.

This inspection matters because damaged filter media can allow dirt to bypass filtration. If debris begins returning to the pool despite apparently clean cartridges, look for torn media, damaged seals, poor cartridge seating, or other internal problems rather than repeatedly washing the same cartridge.

Can You Clean Cartridges Too Often?

Yes. Cleaning simply because a cartridge looks slightly discolored can create unnecessary work and additional handling. Filter cartridges are designed to collect dirt. Some visible contamination does not automatically mean circulation has been significantly restricted.

Unnecessary cleaning can also increase the chance of damaging pleats, seals, clamps, or other components through repeated disassembly. Use pressure rise, flow changes, operating conditions, and the manufacturer's recommendations together instead of assuming that perfectly white cartridge media is the goal.

When Should a Cartridge Be Replaced Instead of Cleaned?

Cleaning cannot repair worn-out media. Consider replacement when you find torn or frayed pleats, cracked end caps, broken support bands, damaged cores, permanently collapsed pleats, or other structural deterioration. Another clue is a filter that returns to restricted flow unusually quickly even after a careful cleaning, assuming algae, chemistry, plumbing restrictions, and excessive flow have been ruled out.

There is no universal replacement age that applies equally to every cartridge. Runtime, water chemistry, cleaning methods, debris load, cartridge quality, and system design all affect service life. Physical condition and filtration performance are more useful than age alone.

Pool Owner Tip: Track More Than Filter Pressure

When you record the clean-filter pressure, also note the date and any unusual pool conditions. Over time, you may discover that your filter normally goes much longer between cleanings except during spring pollen, heavy summer use, or fall leaf season.
