Several seemingly harmless fixes can create new problems. Pouring rigid patching material into a movement joint, grouting the deck tightly against coping, or applying fresh sealant over loose old material may prevent the joint from working properly.

Another mistake is allowing years of sand, dirt, and plant growth to pack into an open joint. Enough rigid debris can reduce the space available for movement. Cleaning and resealing a deteriorated joint before it becomes heavily contaminated is generally easier than dealing with damaged coping or a shifting deck later.
