Once the water surface is hidden, small changes in water level become easier to miss, and some of the everyday clues that normally point to a leak disappear from view. The confusing part is that a cover also reduces evaporation, so unexplained water loss after the cover goes on can deserve more attention, even though spotting that loss may require a more deliberate approach.

A covered pool can still lose water through a leaking liner, damaged fitting, plumbing problem, structural crack, equipment issue, or other defect. The challenge is separating actual pool water loss from rainwater on top of a solid cover, water passing through a mesh cover, normal maintenance changes, and measurement inconsistencies.

Quick answer: A pool leak can become harder to notice after covering because you are no longer watching the waterline every day, evaporation patterns change, debris and splash clues disappear, and rain can complicate measurements. If you suspect a problem, compare water levels from the same reference point under similar conditions instead of relying on appearance alone.

A Cover Hides the Waterline You Normally Watch

During swimming season, many homeowners notice water loss almost accidentally. You walk past the skimmer, see the water sitting lower on the tile, or realize the automatic filler has been running more than usual. With the cover in place, those small visual reminders may disappear for days or weeks.

This matters because slow leaks are often subtle. A pool does not need to lose several inches overnight to have a problem. A small but persistent leak may only become obvious after repeated refilling, unusually frequent winter water additions, or a waterline that drops below an expected point.

Marking or measuring the water level before covering can provide a useful baseline. Choose a fixed reference point such as the bottom of the coping, a tile line, or a known skimmer feature, and always measure from the same location.

Reduced Evaporation Can Change What Water Loss Means

Mesh covers allow water and moisture to move differently than solid covers, while incomplete coverage around steps, raised spas, irregular shapes, or water features can leave exposed areas where evaporation continues.

Rainwater Can Make the Situation Look Backward

After a storm, a solid cover may hold water on top while the actual pool underneath is losing water. From above, everything may look full because the cover is sagging under several gallons of rainwater. That extra weight can also make casual visual comparisons unreliable.

Removing water from the top of the cover introduces another complication. A cover pump should remove rainwater sitting above the cover, not pool water from underneath. However, if a solid cover has a hole, damaged seam, or low area where pool water can reach the pumping zone, water removal may become more difficult to interpret.

With a mesh safety cover, rain can pass into the pool instead. A leaking pool may therefore drop during dry periods and appear to recover after rainfall. Checking only after storms can hide the underlying trend.

Some Leak Clues Become Less Obvious

Water level is not the only clue homeowners use. When the pool is open, you may notice damp soil beside the deck, unusual air bubbles in the returns, changing pump behavior, water collecting near equipment, or cracks and separations near fittings. Cover season often means less time spent inspecting these areas.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Persistent wet ground near plumbing routes or the equipment pad when surrounding areas are otherwise dry.
  • Unexplained air entering the pump basket or return lines while the circulation system is operating.
  • Water that repeatedly settles at approximately the same height, especially near a skimmer opening, return fitting, light niche, or other penetration.
  • An automatic fill system that seems to run more frequently even though the pool is covered.
  • A pool level that drops noticeably during dry weather despite minimal evaporation exposure.

That pattern of the water stopping at a particular elevation can be especially useful. It does not prove the leak is located at that exact point, but fittings and openings near that height become reasonable areas for closer inspection.

Pump-On Versus Pump-Off Water Loss Can Offer a Clue

Another useful distinction is whether the loss changes when the circulation system runs. Some plumbing problems behave differently under pressure or suction.

If water loss appears greater while the pump is operating, pressure-side plumbing, return lines, or equipment-related leaks may deserve attention. If air is being pulled into the system or symptoms change significantly when the pump is off, suction-side plumbing can enter the troubleshooting picture. A leak that continues at a similar rate regardless of pump operation may instead involve the pool shell, liner, fittings, or another static component.

These patterns are clues, not diagnoses. Underground plumbing and interconnected pool systems can produce symptoms that are difficult to isolate without professional testing.

Attached Spas and Water Features Can Complicate the Picture

Pools with raised spas, spillways, fountains, tanning ledges, vanishing edges, or separate water basins deserve extra attention because water may shift between connected sections.

For example, a valve problem can allow an elevated spa to drain slowly back toward the pool after the pump shuts off. That may look like spa water loss rather than a traditional leak. A covered main pool can also make it harder to notice that the overall system's water balance is changing.

Before assuming water has left the property entirely, determine whether it has simply moved from one connected vessel to another.

Use a Controlled Comparison Instead of Guessing

When a covered pool seems to be losing water, consistent measurement is more useful than occasional observation. Record the pool level at the same location and approximately the same time of day. Note rainfall, whether the cover was on, whether water was pumped off the cover, and how long the circulation system operated.

Do Not Assume the Cover Caused the Leak

The timing can be misleading. Discovering water loss shortly after installing a cover does not necessarily mean the cover damaged the pool. The leak may have existed earlier but blended in with summertime evaporation, splash-out, backwashing, swimmers, and frequent topping off.

Covering the pool can actually make abnormal loss more meaningful because one major source of normal water loss, evaporation, has been reduced. What changes is your ability to observe the pool casually.
