The cause is not always a failing pump, either. Water level, a stuck skimmer door, valve settings, clogged baskets, restricted plumbing, and even wind direction can all change how effectively the skimmer pulls debris from the surface.

Check Both Debris Baskets
Most pool owners naturally check the basket inside the skimmer. Do not stop there. The pump strainer basket at the equipment pad can also restrict flow when it becomes packed with leaves, pine needles, seed pods, or other debris.
- Turn the pump off before opening or servicing baskets.
- Empty the skimmer basket completely.
- Check that the basket is seated correctly and not cracked or distorted.
- Inspect and clean the pump strainer basket according to the pump manufacturer's instructions.
- After servicing the pump basket, make sure the pump lid and O-ring reseal correctly before restarting the system.

Your Valve Settings May Be Sending Suction Somewhere Else

If changing a diverter valve to favor that particular skimmer causes pump flow to drop dramatically or makes the pump struggle for water, a restriction in that line becomes more likely.
A severe plumbing blockage is usually better handled by a pool professional than by forcing objects down the line. Improvised clearing methods can compact debris farther into the plumbing or damage fittings.
Look for Signs of Air Entering the Pump
Weak skimmer action can also result from a suction-side air leak. Common trouble spots include the pump lid seal, suction-side fittings, drain plugs, valves, and plumbing connections before the pump.
Watch the clear pump lid while the system is running. A few small bubbles immediately after startup may disappear as the pump primes, but persistent air in the pump basket deserves attention. You may also notice bubbles coming from the pool return jets.
A damaged or poorly seated pump lid O-ring is one possible cause. Low pool water can create similar symptoms, so always rule out the simple water-level issue first.
The Pump Impeller Can Become Restricted
Small debris can occasionally get through the baskets and reach the pump impeller. A clogged impeller can reduce overall water flow even though the pump motor still sounds like it is running.
If the skimmer and pump baskets are clean, the water level is correct, valves are positioned properly, and the pump still has unusually weak flow, an impeller restriction belongs on the troubleshooting list. Pump disassembly involves electrical and mechanical components, so homeowners who are not familiar with their equipment should have a qualified pool technician inspect it.
Good Suction Does Not Always Mean Leaves Will Reach the Skimmer
Sometimes the skimmer itself is working correctly, but the leaves never travel close enough to be captured. This is a circulation problem rather than a suction problem.
Return jets help establish movement across the surface. Their direction should encourage water to travel around the pool toward the skimmer rather than creating dead zones. A large tanning ledge, unusual pool shape, attached spa spillway, or multiple return jets can create competing currents that trap leaves in one section.
Wind can overpower circulation as well. If leaves consistently gather along the same wall on windy days while the skimmer basket is still collecting some debris, the skimmer may be functioning normally. The wind is simply pushing debris faster than the surface current can redirect it.
