What Happens If You Close a Pool Too Early?
The essence of it is simple: closing a pool too early can leave warm water sitting under a cover for weeks while sanitizer is steadily being consumed. That creates conditions where algae, organic debris, and water chemistry problems can develop long before truly cold weather arrives. A pool that looked crystal clear on closing day can therefore become a much bigger project when the cover comes off in spring.
The best closing date is not determined by the calendar alone. Water temperature matters. A common practical benchmark is to wait until the pool water is consistently below about 65 degrees F, especially in climates where the pool will be fully winterized and circulation will stop for months.

Warm Water Does Not Become Dormant Just Because the Pool Is Covered

The goal is not to close as early as possible. It is to send the cleanest possible pool into the coldest part of the year with enough protection to remain stable until spring.
