The power of simple observation can save a pool owner from jumping to an expensive conclusion. Spotting a crack in a gunite pool is unsettling, especially when the first thought is that thousands of gallons of water could be escaping through it. But a visible crack does not automatically mean the pool is leaking, because cracks can occur in different layers of a gunite pool and for very different reasons.
Gunite pools are built with a reinforced concrete shell and normally finished with plaster, quartz, pebble, or another cementitious interior surface. A line that appears to be a crack may exist only in that finish, while a more serious crack may continue into the structural shell. Knowing which situation you are dealing with requires more than simply seeing a line underwater.
Quick answer: Fine cracks, crazing, and shrinkage lines in the pool finish can be cosmetic and may not allow meaningful water loss. A crack becomes more concerning when it is widening, displaced, associated with persistent water loss, crosses multiple materials, or appears to extend through the structural gunite shell.
First, Understand What You Are Actually Looking At
Pool owners commonly use the word "gunite crack" for almost any visible crack in a concrete pool. Technically, however, the visible surface usually is not bare gunite. It is an interior finish installed over the structural shell.
This creates an important distinction. A crack confined to plaster or another finish can look alarming while leaving the underlying shell intact. Cementitious pool finishes can develop small shrinkage or check cracks, and some of these may become less prominent as the cement continues hydrating underwater.
A structural crack is different. It extends into or through the gunite or shotcrete shell. Structural movement may result from soil movement, settlement, hydrostatic pressure, construction problems, or other forces acting on the pool structure. Those cracks deserve closer investigation because they have greater potential to become pathways for water loss.
What Cosmetic Cracking Can Look Like
Surface cracking often appears as very fine lines, sometimes forming a web-like or irregular pattern. Pool professionals may refer to some of this as crazing, checking, or shrinkage cracking. The lines may be easier to see when the pool is empty, when sunlight strikes the surface at an angle, or when discoloration collects in the tiny depressions.
What matters is not simply whether a line exists, but how it behaves. A stable hairline crack that has looked the same for years and is not accompanied by unusual water loss tells a very different story from a crack that recently appeared and continues to widen.
Clues That a Crack Deserves More Attention
No single visual clue provides a complete diagnosis, but certain patterns should move a crack higher on your troubleshooting list.
- The crack has measurable width. A defined opening is more concerning than extremely fine surface checking.
- One side is higher than the other. Displacement can suggest movement in the underlying structure rather than a superficial finish defect.
- The crack crosses the floor and wall transition. Long continuous cracks through major structural areas warrant professional evaluation.
- The crack continues through tile, coping, or nearby materials. Movement affecting multiple parts of the pool can point to a larger structural issue.
- Rust staining appears along the crack. Rust may indicate moisture has reached reinforcing steel or that corrosion-related expansion is occurring beneath the finish.
- The crack is changing. Growth in length, width, or displacement is more significant than a stable cosmetic line.
Structural cracks are generally more defined than superficial crazing, but appearance alone does not reliably prove that a particular crack is actively leaking.
Water Loss Is a Separate Question
A pool can have cracks without leaking, and it can leak without having any obvious crack at all. Plumbing fittings, skimmers, lights, return fittings, water features, equipment, and underground plumbing can all create water-loss problems that have nothing to do with the most visible blemish in the pool.
That means seeing a crack and noticing that the pool needs water more frequently does not automatically establish cause and effect. Before assuming the crack is responsible, first determine whether the pool is actually losing more water than normal evaporation.

It does not identify where a leak is located or prove that a particular crack is leaking, but it may help you decide whether further investigation is worthwhile.
Watch Where the Water Level Stabilizes
If a pool is genuinely losing water, the level at which the loss slows or stops can provide a useful clue. For example, if the water repeatedly falls and stabilizes at approximately the elevation of a suspicious crack, that area deserves closer testing.
Still, this is only a clue. A leak around a light niche, skimmer, return, or another penetration could exist at a similar elevation. More than one leak can also be present. Water-level behavior helps narrow the search, but it does not prove that the nearest crack is responsible.
A Dye Test Can Help Check a Specific Area
Once you have reason to suspect a particular crack, a careful dye test may help reveal whether water is actively being drawn into it. With the circulation system off and the water as still as possible, leak-detection dye can be released very close to the questionable spot. Dye that is consistently pulled into an opening can indicate water movement through that location.
Randomly squirting dye around a moving pool is not very useful. Currents from returns, wind, swimmers, cleaners, and temperature differences can move dye and create misleading results. The area needs to be calm, and the dye should be placed close to the suspected opening without disturbing the water.
Do Not Ignore Cracks Just Because the Pool Is Not Leaking
There is another side to this topic: "not leaking" does not necessarily mean "nothing to worry about." A structural crack may not be passing a noticeable amount of water today but can still reveal movement that deserves evaluation.
Track suspicious cracks over time. Take clear photographs from the same angle, note the date, and compare the crack's length and width periodically. If it grows, separates, develops rust staining, or is accompanied by movement in coping, decking, tile, or the surrounding structure, professional inspection becomes more important.
When to call a pool professional:
- The pool is losing more water than evaporation can reasonably explain.
- A crack is widening, lengthening, or showing vertical displacement.
- The crack crosses the pool shell, tile line, steps, bond beam, or other structural transitions.
- Rust staining or exposed reinforcing steel is visible.
- Several cracks have appeared after soil movement, flooding, drought, freezing conditions, or nearby excavation.
- A repaired crack repeatedly returns.
Repair the Cause, Not Just the Appearance
One common mistake is treating every crack as a plaster problem. If the underlying shell is moving, simply filling or covering the visible surface may hide the symptom without correcting the cause. Structural movement can reopen a repaired area and damage a new finish.
The reverse mistake is equally costly: assuming every fine crack means the pool shell has failed. Surface checking can occur in cementitious materials without representing a major structural defect or an active leak. Proper diagnosis comes before major repair.
The Bottom Line for Gunite Pool Owners
A crack is evidence that something happened in the pool material, but it is not by itself proof of water loss. Start by identifying whether the line appears confined to the finish or shows signs of deeper structural movement. Then separate that question from the question of whether the pool is actually losing water unusually fast.
Monitor the water level, compare evaporation with suspected water loss, watch whether the crack changes, and test suspicious areas when appropriate. If the evidence points toward active leakage or structural movement, bring in a qualified pool or leak-detection professional. A measured troubleshooting process can help you avoid both extremes: ignoring a meaningful problem and paying for major repairs because of a harmless surface crack.
