Low pH, low carbonate alkalinity, low calcium hardness, or an unfavorable overall water balance can contribute to this process. Etched plaster may look dull, pitted, porous, mottled, or slightly cratered. Running your hand across it can feel different from calcium scale. Instead of a deposit sitting on top of the surface, the plaster itself may feel worn away.
