It's easier than you might think to keep a pool operating when only one skimmer is working, at least temporarily. A pool does not automatically become unusable just because one skimmer stops pulling water, especially if the remaining skimmer, pump, filter, and return system are still moving water normally. The bigger question is whether that single working skimmer can provide enough flow and surface cleaning for your particular pool without creating circulation problems or putting unnecessary strain on the equipment.
For many residential pools, the answer is yes: you can run the pool with one working skimmer while you troubleshoot or arrange a repair. However, a two-skimmer pool was generally designed with both suction points for a reason, so operating indefinitely with one disabled skimmer is rarely the ideal setup.
Quick answer: A pool can often operate with one working skimmer if the pump stays fully primed, return flow remains strong, water chemistry stays balanced, and the remaining skimmer receives adequate water. Expect reduced surface-debris collection and pay closer attention to circulation until the second skimmer is restored.
What Changes When One Skimmer Stops Working?
Skimmers pull surface water toward the filtration system, where leaves, insects, pollen, oils, and other floating material can be removed. On a pool with two skimmers, those suction points help collect debris from different areas of the water surface.
If one stops working, the remaining skimmer may suddenly be responsible for most or all of the surface-water intake. The pump may still circulate plenty of water, particularly if the plumbing also draws from a main drain or another suction line, but surface cleaning can become noticeably less effective.
You might see leaves consistently gathering at the dead skimmer, debris collecting in a corner, or a film forming on water that previously stayed clear. Wind direction matters too. If the working skimmer happens to sit on the downwind side of the pool, it may continue catching a surprising amount of debris. If the disabled skimmer normally receives most wind-driven debris, the problem will be much more obvious.
Make Sure the Remaining Skimmer Is Actually Getting Enough Water
Running through one skimmer is only safe if the pump can maintain a steady supply of water. Check the water level carefully. A commonly useful target is around the middle portion of the skimmer opening, although the exact preferred level depends on the skimmer design.
If the water falls too low, the working skimmer can begin drawing air. You may hear slurping or sucking sounds, see air beneath the clear pump lid, or notice bubbles coming from the pool returns. A pump that repeatedly draws air or loses prime should not simply be left running.
Also inspect the working skimmer basket more frequently. Because one basket may now be catching debris that used to be divided between two skimmers, it can fill much faster after storms, windy days, landscaping work, or heavy leaf drop.
Check the Suction Valves Before Assuming the Skimmer Is Broken
One skimmer having no apparent suction does not necessarily mean the skimmer body or underground plumbing has failed. On pools with individually plumbed skimmer lines, suction-side valves near the equipment pad may determine how much water each skimmer receives.
A valve may have been moved during maintenance, partially closed, or left in a position that sends most suction toward the other skimmer, main drain, cleaner line, or spa. If the problem appeared suddenly after equipment service, valve position deserves an early look.
Do not randomly close every suction source while the pump is running. Accidentally restricting all incoming water can cause the pump to lose prime. If the plumbing layout is unclear, take photos of the original valve positions before making adjustments or have a pool professional identify the lines.
Why Would Only One Skimmer Stop Pulling Water?
If one skimmer works strongly while the other has little or no suction, the problem is often localized to that skimmer or its plumbing rather than the entire circulation system. Possibilities include:
- A closed or incorrectly positioned suction valve
- A clogged skimmer basket or obstruction beneath the basket
- A stuck or damaged skimmer weir door
- Leaves, acorns, toys, or other debris lodged in the suction line
- A partial blockage that allows some water through but greatly reduces flow
- A suction-side plumbing leak that introduces air
- A cracked skimmer body or damaged connection
A dirty filter or clogged pump basket usually affects overall system flow rather than only one independently plumbed skimmer, but those components are still worth checking. If both return pressure and skimmer performance seem weaker than normal, look at the entire circulation system rather than focusing exclusively on the inactive skimmer.
One Skimmer Working Strongly Is Different From One Skimmer Barely Working
This distinction matters. If one skimmer has strong suction, the pump basket stays full of water, the returns have normal flow, and the pool remains clean, you may have a manageable temporary situation.
If the only working skimmer itself has weak suction, the situation deserves faster attention. Weak flow can point to a clogged basket, dirty filter, obstructed impeller, suction-side air leak, incorrect valve setting, or restriction in the plumbing. Continuing to run the system without determining whether the pump is receiving adequate water can turn a minor circulation problem into an equipment problem.
Signs not to ignore:
- The pump repeatedly loses prime.
- Large amounts of air remain visible beneath the pump lid.
- Return jets constantly spit air bubbles.
- The working skimmer makes loud gulping sounds.
- Return flow becomes much weaker than normal.
- The pump sounds different, runs unusually hot, or seems starved for water.
Will One Skimmer Keep the Entire Pool Clean?
Possibly, but filtration and surface skimming are not exactly the same thing. Water may still pass through the filter effectively while floating debris accumulates in poorly skimmed areas.
Return-jet direction becomes more important when you lose a skimmer. Properly aimed returns can encourage a broad circulation pattern that gradually moves floating debris toward the working skimmer. A robotic cleaner may help with material that sinks, but it does not fully replace surface skimming.
During the temporary one-skimmer period, manually net leaves and floating debris before they become waterlogged and sink. Brush areas with noticeably poor circulation, particularly steps, benches, corners, tanning ledges, and areas behind ladders where water movement can be weaker.
What If the Skimmer Problem Comes With Water Loss?
A skimmer problem and falling water level do not automatically mean the same thing is causing both symptoms. Hot weather, low humidity, wind, fountains, spillover spas, and other conditions can increase evaporation. At the same time, cracks around a skimmer throat or leaking plumbing can sometimes contribute to actual water loss.
If your pool symptoms also include a water level that seems to be falling faster than normal, a Mini Bucket Test can be a useful first step for comparing normal evaporation with possible leak-related water loss. It does not prove that a leak exists or locate one, but the comparison may help you decide whether further investigation by a pool professional is worthwhile.
Pay particular attention if the pool repeatedly drops to roughly the same level near the skimmer opening and then slows or stops losing water. That pattern can be useful diagnostic information, although it is not by itself proof of where a leak is located.
How Long Can You Operate With One Working Skimmer?
There is no universal number of days because pool plumbing varies. Some pools operate normally with a single skimmer by design. A large pool originally built with two or three skimmers has different circulation needs than a compact pool designed around one.
For a multi-skimmer pool, think of one-skimmer operation as a temporary condition while you identify the failure rather than a permanent modification. If water circulation is healthy, chemistry is stable, the pump remains primed, and the working skimmer is not being overwhelmed, there is usually less urgency than there would be with complete circulation failure.
Repair becomes more important when debris accumulates rapidly, algae repeatedly appears in poorly circulated areas, the pump cannot maintain reliable flow, or the disabled skimmer may have a plumbing or structural leak.

You can often run a pool with only one working skimmer for a limited period, provided the remaining circulation system is functioning properly. Keep the water level adequate, empty the working basket frequently, watch the pump for air, verify strong return flow, manually remove excess debris, and determine why the other skimmer stopped working.
A single functioning skimmer can keep many pools circulating while a problem is diagnosed, but a skimmer that suddenly stops working should not simply be forgotten.
