We can agree that clear pool water is one of the most satisfying parts of owning a pool, but the filter behind that clarity matters more than many homeowners realize. Cartridge and diatomaceous earth, or DE, filters can both produce excellent-looking water, yet they do not filter in exactly the same way. If your main question is which one can remove the finest suspended particles, DE generally has the advantage, but filtration fineness is only one part of choosing the better system for your pool.
Quick answer: DE filters generally capture smaller particles than standard cartridge filters, so DE usually wins when the comparison is strictly about the finest possible filtration. Cartridge filters, however, can still provide very clear water while offering simpler cleaning, no routine DE powder replacement, and no normal backwashing requirement.
How Fine Can Each Filter Actually Clean?
The easiest way to understand the difference is to look at the size of particles each filter can capture. Exact performance varies by filter design, condition, flow rate, and manufacturer, but DE filtration is commonly capable of trapping particles smaller than those captured by a conventional cartridge filter.
A typical DE filter can remove particles around the low-single-digit micron range. Many cartridge filters operate roughly in the 10 to 30 micron range, although some modern cartridge designs can perform better than that.
For perspective, a micron is one-millionth of a meter. Homeowners cannot usually identify these tiny particles individually. Instead, they notice the combined effect as haziness, dull-looking water, or a lack of that polished appearance associated with exceptionally clean water.
This gives DE an advantage after events that introduce large amounts of very fine material, such as windblown dust, heavy pollen, or certain types of suspended debris. A properly operating DE system may remove that fine material more aggressively.
Why Cartridge Filters Can Still Produce Excellent Water
It would be a mistake to assume that a cartridge filter leaves a pool looking dirty simply because DE filters more finely. A properly sized cartridge system paired with adequate circulation and balanced water chemistry can maintain impressively clear water.
Cartridge elements use pleated material that creates a large filtration surface. Pool water passes through those pleats while dirt remains trapped in the media. Large cartridge filters can hold a substantial amount of debris before they need cleaning, particularly when the filter is generously sized for the pool.
Cartridge systems also tend to work well with variable-speed pumps because they can provide effective filtration at relatively low flow rates. For homeowners who operate a pump for longer periods at lower speeds, that can be an attractive combination.
DE Wins on Fineness, but Maintenance Is More Involved
A DE filter contains grids or similar internal elements that become coated with diatomaceous earth powder. The powder creates the fine filtering surface responsible for DE's strong particle-capturing performance.
That extra filtration capability comes with additional maintenance. Depending on the filter design, cleaning may involve backwashing or opening the tank and washing the grids. Fresh DE media must then be added in the correct quantity according to the filter manufacturer's instructions.
Adding too little DE can leave the grids inadequately coated. Adding too much can create excessive restriction and shorten the time before another cleaning is necessary. Torn grids or damaged internal components can also allow DE powder to return to the swimming pool, sometimes appearing as pale material near return fittings or on the pool floor.
Handling DE powder also requires following the product and equipment manufacturer's safety instructions and avoiding inhalation of airborne powder.
Cartridge Maintenance Is Different, Not Maintenance-Free
Cartridge filters eliminate the normal backwash-and-recharge routine associated with many DE systems. When cleaning is required, the pump is shut off, pressure is safely relieved, and the cartridge elements are removed and rinsed thoroughly according to the manufacturer's procedure.
The important detail is cleaning between the pleats rather than simply spraying the outside surface. Oils, sunscreen residue, scale, and deeply embedded debris may require a more thorough cleaning process than a quick hose rinse.
Cartridges also wear out. Flattened pleats, torn fabric, cracked end caps, damaged bands, or cartridges that remain restricted shortly after cleaning are signs that replacement may be necessary.
Do Not Judge Either Filter by the Pressure Gauge Alone
Your filter's clean starting pressure is more useful than comparing your reading with somebody else's pool. After cleaning the filter, note the normal operating pressure for your specific system. As debris accumulates, resistance increases and the pressure commonly rises.
Many pool-care recommendations use an increase of roughly 8 to 10 psi above clean pressure as a common cleaning trigger, but the manufacturer's instructions for your equipment should take priority.
There is another clue homeowners sometimes miss: pressure that climbs unusually fast after cleaning. That can happen after a storm, an algae cleanup, or a major dust event because the filter is collecting an unusually heavy contaminant load. If it happens repeatedly under normal conditions, inspect the filter elements, circulation, water chemistry, and overall system operation rather than assuming the filter simply needs endless cleaning.
What If the Pool Is Cloudy?
Switching from cartridge to DE will not automatically fix every cloudy pool. Filtration is only one piece of water clarity.
Cloudiness can also result from inadequate sanitizer, poor circulation, an algae problem, improper pH, excessive suspended material, or a filter that is undersized, damaged, dirty, or bypassing debris internally. A high-performance filter cannot compensate indefinitely for water chemistry that allows algae to grow.
Before blaming the filter type, check whether the system is actually moving enough water, whether the filter is clean, whether the elements are intact, and whether the pool chemistry is within the appropriate range.
Which Filter Is Better After Heavy Dust or Pollen?
This is one situation where the distinction becomes easier to see. Pools exposed to desert dust, nearby construction, intense pollen, or frequent windblown fine debris can challenge any filtration system.
DE's ability to capture extremely small suspended particles can be valuable when polishing water after those events. A cartridge filter can also clear the pool, but it may require longer circulation or repeated cartridge cleaning when the debris load is unusually high.
Oversizing matters here. A larger cartridge filter provides more surface area and generally allows more debris accumulation before restriction becomes significant. Likewise, a correctly sized DE filter is preferable to relying on the smallest unit that technically satisfies the pool's requirements.

- Consider the whole system: pump flow, plumbing, circulation, filter condition, water chemistry, and operating time all affect how clear the pool ultimately becomes.
