It can be tempting to flip the breakers back on and see what happens, but restarting too quickly is one of the easiest ways to turn hidden freeze damage into a bigger repair. The safest approach is to let everything thaw completely, inspect the system carefully, restore the plumbing configuration, and then bring equipment online in a controlled order.
Frozen water expands inside pumps, filters, heaters, valves, chlorinators, and plumbing. A crack that formed overnight may be nearly invisible while ice is still present and may not begin leaking until the equipment thaws. That makes the inspection before startup every bit as important as the startup itself.

Return valves to their normal circulation positions. Make sure suction from the pool is available and that return water has an open path back to the pool. Never start a pump against closed plumbing.

Prime the Pool Pump Before Starting It
A pool pump should not be allowed to run dry. Before startup, verify that the pool water level is high enough to supply the skimmer or other suction points.
With power still off, open the pump lid and make sure the pump basket is correctly installed and free of debris. Fill the pump strainer housing with water when required for your system, inspect and lubricate the lid O-ring with an appropriate pool-safe lubricant if needed, and securely reinstall the lid.
An air leak around the lid, suction union, drain plug, or valve can make a pump difficult to prime. If the pump will not establish steady circulation after restart, shut it down rather than repeatedly running it without adequate water.
Release Air From the Filter During Startup
One detail that homeowners sometimes overlook is trapped air in the filter. If your filter has a manual air relief valve, follow the manufacturer's startup procedure and use that valve to purge air from the system.
Typically, the relief is opened before startup and remains open while the pump begins moving water. Once a steady stream of water is discharged instead of sputtering air and water, the relief can be closed according to the filter manufacturer's directions.
Stand clear of the filter during startup. Pool filters operate under pressure, and their clamps, lids, gauges, valves, and pressure-relief components should be correctly assembled before operation.
Watch the Equipment Pad as Pressure Builds
Do not restart the pump and immediately walk away. The first several minutes can reveal damage that was invisible while the plumbing was depressurized.
Watch for dripping or spraying water, unusual vibration, grinding or humming noises, bubbles accumulating in the pump basket, fluctuating filter pressure, weak return flow, or a pump that repeatedly loses prime.
Also inspect the ground beneath the heater and filter. Water appearing there after startup can indicate a cracked internal component or drain fitting rather than ordinary condensation.
Compare the filter pressure with the normal operating pressure you remember from before the freeze. A dramatically unusual reading deserves investigation. Do not rely on one universal PSI number because normal pressure varies considerably among pools and plumbing configurations.
Bring the Heater Back Online Last
If your pool has a gas heater, heat pump, or other heating equipment, establish reliable water circulation before attempting to run it. A heater should not be the first component used to test whether the system survived the freeze.
Confirm that the pump is holding prime, returns are producing normal flow, filter pressure is stable, and there are no visible leaks. Then follow the heater manufacturer's startup instructions.
Freeze damage inside heater plumbing can sometimes reveal itself only when water begins circulating. If water appears inside or underneath the heater cabinet, shut the system down and have the heater inspected.
Do Not Forget Automation and Freeze Protection Settings
After an emergency freeze, schedules may have been changed, circuits switched to service mode, or breakers shut off. Once equipment is operating normally, verify pump schedules, valve settings, automation modes, and freeze-protection settings.
Owners of variable-speed pumps should also confirm that the programmed speeds still provide adequate circulation for the pool's filter, heater, chlorinator, spa, and water features.
