You have the power to teach a new pool owner one habit that can prevent a surprising number of headaches: pay attention to the waterline. A pool's water level is not just something to notice when the water suddenly looks low. Learning what a normal waterline looks like, how quickly it changes, and what conditions affect it can give an owner an early warning about evaporation, equipment problems, excessive splash-out, or possible leaks.
The lesson does not need to be complicated. In fact, the best way to teach it is to make waterline awareness part of a simple weekly routine rather than turning every small change into a leak investigation. The goal is to help a new owner recognize patterns.
Start by Showing Them the Pool's Normal Water Level
Do not begin with measurements or leak calculations. Begin by physically showing the owner where the water should normally sit in relation to the skimmer opening.
For many residential pools, a practical operating level is around the middle of the skimmer opening. The exact ideal level can vary with the pool and skimmer design, so the equipment manufacturer's recommendations should take priority. What matters is giving the owner an easy visual reference they can recognize at a glance.
Explain why this matters. If the water gets too low, the skimmer can begin pulling air instead of a steady flow of water. That can reduce circulation, cause bubbles, interfere with pump priming, and potentially allow the pump to run without enough water. If the level is excessively high, surface debris may not be drawn through the skimmer as effectively.
Easy teaching trick: Ask the new owner to take a clear phone photo of the skimmer when the water is at its normal level. That picture becomes a quick personal reference instead of relying on memory several weeks later.
Teach Them to Look for Trends, Not One-Day Changes
A pool's waterline moves naturally. A lower level does not automatically mean the pool is leaking.
Evaporation changes with weather. Hot temperatures, dry air, wind, direct sunlight, heated pool water, and an uncovered surface can all accelerate water loss. A week of cool, humid, calm weather can produce a very different result from a week of hot, windy conditions.
Swimming activity matters too. Children jumping into the pool, people repeatedly climbing out with wet swimsuits, energetic games, and water splashing over the coping can remove more water than a quiet week with little pool use.
Rain works in the opposite direction. A storm can temporarily raise the pool several inches, which makes comparing today's waterline with last week's level almost meaningless unless the owner remembers the weather in between.
The better question is not, "Did the water go down?" It is, "Is the water dropping faster or behaving differently than it normally does under similar conditions?"
Create a 30-Second Waterline Check
New pool owners are more likely to maintain a habit when it is simple. Teach them to glance at four things while standing beside the pool:
- Where is the water relative to the skimmer opening?
- Has the level changed noticeably since the previous check?
- Was there unusual heat, wind, rain, swimming, or backwashing?
- Is anything around the equipment pad unexpectedly wet?
This quick observation can be done whenever they empty the skimmer basket, test the water, or walk around the pool. It does not require a separate maintenance session.
Show Them What Low Water Can Do to the Equipment
A new owner may think of water level as a cosmetic issue until they see how closely it is tied to circulation.
When the water drops far enough below the normal skimmer range, the pump may begin drawing air through the skimmer. The owner might notice gurgling at the skimmer, air visible beneath a clear pump lid, intermittent loss of prime, or bubbles entering the pool through the return fittings.
Those symptoms do not automatically prove that low water is the only problem. A clogged basket, loose pump lid, damaged seal, or suction-side plumbing issue can create similar signs. However, checking the waterline is one of the simplest first steps.
Explain the Difference Between Refilling and Investigating
New owners often fall into one of two extremes. Some become concerned every time they add water. Others automatically refill the pool without noticing how frequently they are doing it.
Teach them that occasional topping off is normal. What deserves attention is an unexplained change in the pattern.
For example, suppose an owner normally adds a modest amount of water after several hot days. Suddenly, the pool needs substantially more water even though the weather has been mild and nobody has been swimming. That change is more informative than the simple fact that water had to be added.
Another clue is consistency. If the owner refills to the normal line in the evening and repeatedly finds the level unusually low the next morning, it is worth investigating rather than continually adding water and forgetting about it.
Waterline clues worth investigating:
- The pool begins needing water much more frequently than usual.
- The level falls noticeably during mild, humid, or low-wind weather.
- Water loss continues even when the pool is barely being used.
- The equipment pad, plumbing connections, or ground nearby stays wet.
- A vinyl liner develops suspicious wrinkles or movement.
- Water seems to stop dropping at approximately the same elevation repeatedly.
Do Not Let Automatic Fill Systems Hide the Pattern
Automatic water-level systems are convenient, but they can make unexplained water loss harder for a new owner to notice. The pool may look perfectly normal every morning while the autofill quietly replaces lost water.
If a pool has an autofill, teach the owner where it is and how it works. An unexpectedly high water bill, an autofill that seems to run frequently, or unusually constant water movement through the fill device can be useful clues.
The same principle applies to anyone who routinely tops off the pool with a hose. Encourage the owner to notice how often the hose comes out and roughly how long it runs. A simple note on a phone calendar can reveal a pattern that memory misses.
Account for Spas, Waterfalls, and Other Water Features
Not every pool loses water at the same rate. An attached spa with a spillover, raised waterfall, fountain, deck jet, or other feature can expose more water to moving air. That can increase evaporation, especially in dry or windy conditions.
A heated spa can also lose water faster to evaporation than the cooler pool beside it. If a new owner compares their pool with a neighbor's simpler, unheated pool, the comparison may be misleading.
Teach the owner to compare the pool with its own history rather than trying to decide whether its water loss is "normal" based solely on another backyard.
When the Waterline Pattern Looks Suspicious
If the owner believes the pool may be losing more water than weather and normal use can explain, the next step should be controlled troubleshooting rather than guessing where a leak might be.

Teach them where the normal level sits, what weather does to evaporation, how swimming and backwashing can change the level, and why automatic refilling can hide a problem. Then encourage one quick visual check whenever they perform routine pool care.
A homeowner who knows the pool's normal rhythm is much more likely to notice when something changes. That small habit can protect circulation equipment, reduce wasted water, make troubleshooting easier, and turn the waterline into one of the simplest diagnostic tools in the backyard.
