Draining a swimming pool before a hurricane may sound logical because several inches of rain could raise the water level quickly. In most situations, however, completely draining an in-ground pool is not recommended, and leaving adequate water in the pool can actually help protect the structure during severe weather.
A hurricane creates several different threats at once: heavy rainfall, saturated soil, high groundwater, windblown debris, flooding, and possible power outages. Your pool preparation should account for all of them rather than focusing only on whether rain might make the pool overflow.
Quick answer: Do not completely drain an in-ground swimming pool simply because a hurricane is approaching. The weight of the water helps keep the pool in place when surrounding soil becomes saturated. If your pool is already unusually high, carefully lowering the level modestly may be appropriate, but follow the pool builder's, equipment manufacturer's, or local professional's recommendations for your particular pool.
Why Draining a Pool Before a Hurricane Can Be Risky
An in-ground pool is essentially a large structure sitting in soil. During prolonged hurricane rainfall or flooding, groundwater around and underneath the pool can rise dramatically. A filled pool has thousands of gallons of water pressing downward and helping counteract upward groundwater pressure.
Remove that weight at the wrong time and the pool may become more vulnerable to hydrostatic pressure. Do Not Put Patio Furniture in the Pool
A commonly repeated hurricane trick is to sink patio furniture in the pool so it cannot blow away. That may keep the furniture from becoming airborne, but it introduces other risks. Metal furniture can stain pool finishes, sharp edges may damage liners or surfaces, and coatings can deteriorate in chemically treated water.
A better approach is to move outdoor furniture and loose objects into a secure garage, shed, or protected indoor location whenever possible.
After the Hurricane, Expect Water Chemistry to Change
Heavy rainfall can dilute sanitizer, alter pH and alkalinity, introduce dirt and organic debris, and overwhelm normal filtration. Floodwater creates a more serious situation because it may carry soil, sewage, fertilizers, fuel, chemicals, or other contaminants into the pool.

Bottom line: A hurricane is generally not a reason to completely drain an in-ground pool. Keeping water in the pool provides valuable weight against rising groundwater pressure. Concentrate instead on securing loose objects, protecting equipment, clearing drainage paths, monitoring the water level, and following professional guidance if your particular pool requires a small pre-storm adjustment.
