When the pool water falls below the skimmer opening, the skimmer can begin pulling air instead of water. For many pools, the normal target is roughly halfway up the skimmer opening. That gives the skimmer enough water to operate properly while still allowing it to pull floating leaves, insects, and other debris from the surface.

Quick answer: If the water falls below the skimmer, turn the pool pump off if it is sucking air or losing prime. Restore the water level before running the system normally again. A pump should not be allowed to run dry.

What Actually Happens When the Water Gets Too Low?

The skimmer is connected to the suction side of the circulation system. With a normal water level, the pump pulls a continuous stream of water through the skimmer basket and plumbing.

The risk is not simply that the pump stops circulating water. A pump can continue running while receiving too little water, which means a homeowner may not immediately realize there is a problem.

If you see a mostly empty pump basket or large amounts of air moving through it, shut the system off rather than hoping it will eventually recover on its own.

A brief gulp of air caused by swimmers or temporary water movement does not automatically mean the pump has been damaged. The bigger concern is sustained air intake or dry operation.

Why the Skimmer Can Suck Air Before the Water Looks Extremely Low

Pool owners sometimes expect trouble only after the water physically drops below the bottom of the skimmer opening. In practice, problems can begin earlier.

The skimmer weir, which is the swinging flap at the opening, affects how water enters the skimmer. If the water is marginally low, strong pump suction can pull the water level inside the skimmer down enough to create a vortex that begins drawing air.

A stuck weir can make the problem worse. Debris can also interfere with water entering the skimmer. That means a skimmer that appears to have some water in front of it may still be starved for adequate flow.

Variable-speed pumps add another wrinkle. A pool may seem fine at a low filtration speed but begin pulling air when the pump switches to a higher speed for cleaning, heating, or another scheduled cycle.

What Should You Do If the Water Is Below the Skimmer?

If the pump is running and the skimmer is sucking air, turn the pump off. Then bring the pool back to its normal operating level before restarting it.

  1. Add water until the level reaches approximately the middle of the skimmer opening, unless your pool or equipment manufacturer specifies otherwise.
  2. Check the skimmer basket and remove debris.
  3. Make sure the skimmer weir moves freely rather than sticking in the upright position.
  4. Look through the pump lid and confirm the pump basket fills properly after restart.
  5. Watch the return jets for persistent air bubbles.

If the pump lost its prime completely, it may need to be primed according to the pump manufacturer's instructions before normal operation resumes.

Important: Do not repeatedly restart a pump that cannot establish normal water flow. Persistent failure to prime can indicate low water, a blocked suction path, an air leak, an incorrectly positioned valve, or another circulation problem that deserves troubleshooting.

Why Did the Pool Water Fall That Low?

Restoring the level solves the immediate problem, but it is also worth asking why the pool became low enough to starve the skimmer.

Hot weather, low humidity, wind, splash-out, backwashing, and heavy swimming can all reduce the water level. Pools with waterfalls or other water features may experience additional evaporation because more water is exposed to moving air.

Automatic water levelers can hide a different problem. If one stops working, the owner may suddenly notice a level drop that previously would have been replenished automatically. Conversely, a functioning autofill can conceal persistent water loss by continuously adding replacement water.

If the pool keeps dropping back toward the skimmer shortly after being refilled, unexplained water loss deserves closer attention. What If Your Pool Has More Than One Skimmer or a Main Drain?

Plumbing configuration matters. A pool with two skimmers may begin drawing air through the shallower or more exposed skimmer while the other still receives water. Depending on valve positions, that single air-starved line can disrupt the pump's suction.

A main drain does not make a low skimmer harmless. Even if the pump continues receiving some water through another suction source, air entering through an exposed skimmer can still interfere with circulation.

Likewise, pools with attached spas, tanning ledges, or water features can have operating levels and plumbing arrangements that are less obvious than those of a basic rectangular pool. If valve settings or multiple bodies of water are involved, follow the equipment configuration recommended for your system.

When Should You Call a Pool Professional?

Professional help makes sense when the pump will not regain prime after the water level has been corrected, when you continue seeing substantial air in the pump basket, or when the water level repeatedly drops for no obvious reason.

You should also have the equipment inspected if the pump ran dry for an extended period and afterward develops leakage, unusual noise, weak flow, or recurring priming problems.

The Bottom Line
